Last week, Highland CIC Chair Yvonne Crook, Vice Chair Jan A. Tucker and board director, Willie Cameron proudly welcomed a Japanese delegation to explore the extraordinary opportunities our region offers. Highland CIC had the pleasure of hosting them at the iconic Tomatin Distillery Co Ltd, where tradition met innovation in the perfect Highland setting, and later at Loch Ness Country House Hotel where the group experienced a presentation on one of the icons of the Highlands – Loch Ness.
We shared perspectives on the Highlands’ £100bn forecast investment in renewable energy and transformational projects – from offshore wind and hydro to green hydrogen – and the unique way this growth sits alongside our world-class tourism industry.
What stood out most was the synergy we discovered:
– Renewables driving a net zero future. – Tourism showcasing landscapes, culture and heritage that define the Highlands. – Community value is at the heart of both, ensuring long-term prosperity for generations.
Our Japanese colleagues brought invaluable insights into how their own industries weave together clean energy, community and tourism. The similarities between Japan and the Highlands is clear – rich in heritage, ambition and a commitment to leaving a lasting legacy.
This is just the beginning. Together, we can shape a future where the Highlands are a global exemplar of sustainable growth, cultural pride and international collaboration.
If you’d like to be part of the conversation, book tickets for The Highland Sustainable Development Summit on 25 and 26 November 2025 at The Kingsmills Hotel in Inverness.
Highland Renewables is a forward-thinking network of businesses committed to harnessing the Highlands’ abundant natural resources to deliver renewable energy projects and strategically important sustainable development initiatives.
Driven by a shared ambition and vision, we support the business-led community effort for the Highlands to become a global leader in sustainable development, aligned with both local and national government policies.
Through these initiatives, we not only contribute to global climate goals and Scotland’s net zero ambitions, but also promote strategic investment in local communities, environmental stewardship and infrastructure.
Our aim is to leave a lasting legacy that benefits the Highlands for generations to come. If you’d like to know more about our organisation and how you can get involved in our sustainable development initiatives, please contact us at info@highlandcic.org
